Through close musical analysis of each song, Dai Griffiths explores the themes and ideas that have made this album resonate so deeply with its audience, and argues that OK Computer is one of the most successfully realized CD albums so far created. EXCERPT But then \u0091Karma Police' changes. After the second chorus the track lifts, in various ways. Harmonically, there's a key change of sorts (the sheet music charmingly follows the convention of preparing the reader for the new key signature), from E minor to B minor, although in truth both sections use similar chords. Then vocally or melodically, the key change takes Thom Yorke to his angelic register. Texturally, there's a big shift, with all the instruments doing lighter things. Best to my mind though, there's the one word, phew. Phew's great: it's a cartoon word, like \u0091gulp' or \u0091zzzz' or \u0091bah'. Its precision matters, the fact that it's really there, properly pronounced, not just sort-of-breathed...

A nation is given shape in large part through the cultural activities of its builders. Historically, nationalists have turned to the arts and media to articulate and institute a sense of unique national identity. This was certainly true of Canada in the twentieth century. Canadian Content explores ways in which nationhood was defined and pursued through cultural means in Canada throughout the last century. As a framework for the study, Ryan Edwardson distinguishes between three phases of Canadianization: support for the arts and cultured mass media during the colony-to-nation transition; the 'new nationalist' empowerment of multi-brow culture and the call for state intervention in the mid-1960s and 1970s; and the 'cultural industrialism' initiated by the federal government under Pierre Trudeau in 1968. Examining each phase in its turn, Canadian Content looks at Canada as an ongoing postcolonial process of not one but a series of radically different nationhoods, each with its own valued but tentative set of cultural criteria for orchestrating and implementing a Canadian national experience. Considering the relationship between culture and national identity, this study offers an idea of what it means to be Canadian, and suggests just how adaptable, problematic, and ongoing the pursuit of nationhood can be.

Introduction to Applied Optics for Engineers introduces the reader to applied optics and presents ideas on coherent optical data processing. Topics covered include applications and approximations for radiation fields; physical realizations of phase transformers, lenses, and systems; applications of optical filtering to data processing; and partial coherence. Several examples from bioengineering-related research are provided. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an introduction to the basic equations of physical optics that are derived using the wave treatment approach, resulting in the simpler geometrical (ray) optics approximation. The differential form of Maxwell's equations is considered, along with propagation in free space and Fermat's principle. The following chapters explore applications and approximations for radiation fields, with emphasis on Fraunhofer fields, circular and multiple apertures, and phase effects in apertures; physical realizations of phase transformers, lenses, and spherical and parabolic surfaces; and system transform concepts including Fourier transform representation of fields and calculation techniques for imaging through a lens. The remaining chapters focus on interface devices, interferometry, holography, and scattering. This monograph is intended for students and engineers with a traditional background in electromagnetic wave theory.
